Development Engineer (Materials and Prototyping)

Development Engineer (Materials and Prototyping)

We are seeking an enthusiastic undergraduate engineer to join our team for a 3-month placement. This role will focus on hands-on engineering work supporting the development of nanocrystalline magnetic materials and the design and fabrication of mechanical components, fixtures, and test rigs critical to our R&D and materials processing pipeline.
Working closely with our materials scientists and mechanical engineers, you will be involved in:

  • Building and testing prototype stator cores to support the development of next-generation electric motors
  • Designing and fabricating custom jigs, tooling, and experimental fixtures for material processing and performance testing
  • Contributing to the refinement of pilot-scale manufacturing processes, through materials development and feedback loops
  • This role provides a rare opportunity to apply both materials/electrical mechanical/mechatronics engineering knowledge in a real-world R&D environment, making tangible contributions to the future of electric motor technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation and testing of magnetic materials, including sample cutting, mounting, and characterisation
  • Design and fabricate jigs, fixtures, and prototype components using CAD and in-house tools
  • Support materials processing experiments and capture test data and results
  • Maintain lab documentation and experimental records
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of prototyping processes and safety practices

About You

  • Undergraduate studying Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or related field
  • Comfortable using basic hand tools and workshop equipment
  • Familiarity with CAD (e.g., SolidWorks or Fusion 360)
  • Strong problem-solving mindset with attention to detail
  • Eager to learn, collaborate, and contribute in a hands-on lab environment

What You’ll Gain

  • Experience working in a startup environment pioneering advanced materials
  • Skills in materials handling, rapid prototyping, and electric motor technology
  • Exposure to commercial R&D processes, lab work, and product development
  • The opportunity to contribute to real projects with meaningful climate impact
