Mechanical Engineer Intern

Parish Engineering is a family-owned Australian precision engineering company, specializing in the manufacture of high-quality components in Moorabbin, Victoria. With a long history of investment in staff and training, Parish Engineering’s commitment to its people dates back to 1935, when our first apprentice joined us, later becoming Production Manager until 1946. Even today, our Maintenance Manager began his career with us as an apprentice in 1985.

Reporting to: Production Manager

Key Responsibilities:
As a valued member of our team, you will support and participate in a variety of tasks and projects, including:

  • Operating advanced machinery such as CNC Mill-Turn centres and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs).
  • Conducting quality control inspections using precision measuring instruments like micrometers, vernier calipers, and gauges.
  • Assisting with CNC machine setup and optimisation.
  • Reviewing and interpreting technical drawings using AutoCAD and other CAD platforms to ensure component accuracy and manufacturability.
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives using LEAN principles, 5S, and waste elimination strategies.
  • Performing basic equipment maintenance and supporting general factory operations.
  • Promoting a strong culture of safety, quality, and accountability across all activities.
  • Collaborating with engineers, setters, and production teams to troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges.

     

Learning Opportunities:
Throughout the internship, you’ll be exposed to and trained in:

  • AutoCAD drawing interpretation and revision, and how technical drawings relate to machining and inspection.
  • Advanced manufacturing technologies, including multi-axis CNC machines and digital metrology.
  • CAD/CAM systems and fundamentals of G-code for CNC programming.
  • LEAN Manufacturing tools including 5S, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Quality assurance systems including ISO 9001 and first-article inspection processes.
  • Cross-functional collaboration across production, maintenance, and engineering teams.
  • Mentorship from highly experienced engineers and tradespeople with a passion for training the next generation.

About You:

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and an interest in technical drawing and design.
